Sudhindra Mokhasi,
Bangalore-based author and entrepreneur, wonders if a formal education is imperative to excel in the field of arts

Any way you look at it, a list comprising Chetan Bhagat, Russel Crowe, JK Rowling, John Grisham, Robin Cook, James Cameron and Quentin Tarantino includes successful and creative people of our times. Add some legends to the list - Srinivasa Ramanujam, Kishore Kumar, Leonardo Da Vinci, Arthur Conan Doyle, Gustav Eiffel and Arthur C Clarke, and you have an overwhelming list of creative minds.

Their aggregated educational qualifications are interesting: an engineer and management graduate, two doctors of medicine, a lawyer, a French language major, a signal technician in the armed forces, a structural engineer, and most others either high school dropouts or without a formal 'certificate' education.

All these personalities share a significant characteristic ? autodidacts ? people who were mostly self-taught and did not receive formal 'certificate' education for the art form in which they excelled.

Is it provocative to postulate that greatness in artistic endeavour is possible without formal education in the same skill? While everyone in the list pursued their calling when they found it, for me, the key is the path they chose to get there. The first category comprises people who did not attempt formal education at all, but got into the art form of their interest, soaked in the multifarious experience while waiting for the right opportunity.

Artists in the second category first took up conventional education due to societal / family pressure or simply because their artistic calling was nebulous. Chetan Bhagat, J K Rowling, John Grisham, Robin Cook, Arthur Conan Doyle, Karl Marx, Gustav Eiffel and Arthur C Clarke trod this path. Interestingly, some of them adapted their formal education knowledge to further their artistic pursuit ? Robin Cook with medical knowledge, John Grisham with legal experience. Perhaps, it may also have been easier for them to take the artistic leap of faith because of the perception of security their conventional education offered them.

This pursuit of artistic happiness continues. You will find a fair sprinkling of graphic and web designers attempting to make it into this profession on the back of their natural sense of aesthetic and proficiency in use of computer art tools alone. I have worked with two self-taught graphic artists who were intuitively brilliant and whose absence of formal training helps them create refreshingly different designs.

There is a plethora of new writers in India: Author Amish's journey from a management graduate to banker to a full-time author is well-known, Dipen Ambalia quit his corporate job to write-full time and he is already three books old.
Finally, while the choice of the path is an individual call, it is useful to know the road taken by the others before us.

‘Contineo’- a platform that enables and empowers academic autonomy launched

Company angel funded by Jerry Rao, Anant Koppar joins advisory board

Bangalore, May 14, 2013: E-Sutra today announced the launch of 'Contineo' a pioneering software platform for implementation and administration of academic autonomy. Designed for use by deemed & private universities, autonomous colleges and other similar institutions, Contineo executes full academic autonomy culminating in secure, confidential, accurate, efficient and auditable examinations including those of the paper and pen variety. The software has been successfully proven in the field for over 15 months at the autonomous institution BVBCET, Hubli. Contineo is based in Bangalore and has been angel funded by Jaithirth ‘Jerry’ Rao and Anant Koppar joins their advisory board.

Announcing the product, Sudhindra Mokhasi, Founder & CEO said “The autonomous movement in India has gained significant momentum with high quality institutions and colleges being granted autonomous or University status. Karnataka alone has approved 13 new private universities this year and the sector has grown over 120% in five years. Organisations embarking on academic autonomy face two challenges: a framework for implementation & administration of the autonomous process itself and academic innovation within this framework. Contineo comprehensively addresses the first challenge through its software platform and provides insightful analytics and tools to aid the execution of the second.”

"Contineo’s innovative design philosophy provides users unprecedented power and control over processes through time and context aware dashboards held together in a clean, uncluttered, intuitive interface. Exception based management is intrinsic. Important functions like answer script evaluation have a unique management framework for control of the complex process through analytical visualization," he added.

Jaithirth ‘Jerry’ Rao, angel investor in Contineo since inception said “Making India a hub for innovation will guarantee our nation’s long-term prosperity and is achievable only if institutions of higher education are granted true autonomy to research and innovate. With the movement towards autonomy gathering momentum, adoption of technology is imperative. Contineo addresses the gamut of academic requirements of autonomy in an innovative platform. I am happy that the team is not just creating stakeholder value, but also aiding an important national cause.”

Ashok Shettar, Principal of the autonomous institution, BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli and life member of KLE Society who was the first to adopt Contineo says “We chose Contineo after elaborate evaluation of solutions in the marketplace. Our requirement was a very strong autonomy implementation platform which would protect and enhance our core business. All the other solutions were generic ERP products with autonomy as a sub feature. Contineo stood out for its deep internalization of the concepts of autonomy and the refreshingly clean and uncluttered interface. Outcome Based Education (OBE) readiness and the ability to seamlessly transition to University were also important factors.”

“After 5 months of pilot and 10 months of full implementation, I would say the product performance and service levels have been exemplary. In our last academic term, we were able to execute the entire cycle from conduction of exams to publishing of results in 3 weeks flat!” he added.

Anant Koppar, successful serial IT entrepreneur and Karnataka Rajyotsava awardee who joined the advisory board said “Contineo is a category creator that addresses the critical business processes of academic autonomy in one elegant, intuitive, robustly engineered solution. Working with Contineo will be at the intersection of my two personal interests - Fostering the adoption of academic autonomy in India through IT and mentoring a company that aims to build world class products with Indian relevance and global applicability. I am excited“ CEO of KTwo Technologies added.

Sudhindra Mokhasi, the CEO of Contineo added "I am thrilled to welcome Anant Koppar to our Advisory Board. His leadership insights, insider view of the academic community and extensive product engineering expertise will be of immense value as we scale our business to the next level.”
